Geneva Vanderzeil's DIY how-to for reviving a timber cabinet

Have you found yourself in this design dilemma? The gorgeous but very dated cabinet you've loved forever looks a little drab, or you've stumbled across a well-loved piece in desperate need of some TLC. Why not revive it?

We're conditioned to believe that if the furniture isn't perfect, we should look for something new. But the shopping trip can wait. Because with a few new design elements and Prooftint in Black Japan, that cabinet (and everything else) will look like a beautiful statement piece in no time!

Each coat of our Black Japan wood stain colour imparts a rich, dark tint that is oh so sophisticated. And the best part? You won't believe how easy it is!

The steps

  1. Remove any existing coatings using timber stripper* if needed, and sand the timber to create a smooth, bare surface.

  2. Using a brush or cloth, apply Prooftint evenly over the cabinet’s exterior and handles, ensuring every spot is covered.

  3. Make yourself a cup of tea while the stain penetrates the surface, which will take around 2-5 minutes. Wipe off the excess with a clean, soft cloth.

  4. Ensure the edges of adjoining sections are carefully blended together by evenly wiping the overlap area.

  5. Attach the handles to your desired location, screwing them in place.

  6. Finally, seal your piece with our Timber Floor Wax. This clear topcoat ensures lasting protection and fully develops the final colour!
