Thrifted side table

Step One: Thrift it

Thrift a side table with plenty of potential from your local Salvos, op shop, or even one of your own that has seen better days.

Step One: Thrift it

Step Two: Strip it

Using a paint stripper, remove any existing paint or coatings and sand the side table down to a smooth finish. You can use a rotary tool to strip the paint off hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.

Step Three: Polish it

Remove any handles and give them a polish to give them new life.

Step Four: Coat it

Coat your sanded side table with Tung Oil to nourish and protect the timber. Simply rub it in with a rag and allow it to dry.

Step Five: Tint it

Apply one coat of Prooftint in Oak for a warm base.

Step Six: Sand it

Lightly sand back the side table.

Step Seven: Tint it again

Apply a mixture of Prooftint in Black Japan and Tung Oil with a brush. Wipe off excess with a rag.
For even greater depth and character, continue to apply small amounts of undiluted Black Japan Prooftint onto the side table with a rag. Sand back any areas which come out a little too dark.
