Relove a vintage cabinet with Geneva Vanderzeil

Relove a vintage cabinet with Geneva Vanderzeil

Upcycling and giving old furniture new life is somewhat of a hobby for serial fixer-upper Geneva Vanderzeil. Always with a project underway, Geneva shares her tips, tricks and DIY ideas with an eager audience on her Instagram and TikTok channels, as well as her blog, Collective Gen. In this impressive project, Geneva chose a pre-loved family item, previously painted blue by her mother. See how she took the vintage cabinet from drab to fab with a bit of re-loving.

Prepping the cabinet

Geneva kick-started her cabinet revival by first removing the broken glassware, stripping the existing blue paint, then sanding the surface back for a perfect smooth finish, ready for staining.

Adding some colour

After asking her followers to choose from a shortlist of options, Geneva chose Old Baltic Proof Tint stain to add warmth to the stripped wood.

Finishing touches

As the original glass was damaged, Geneva needed to source a replacement. Rather than choosing plain panels, she chose fluted glass to add a decorative touch to the cabinet. Finished simply with original hardware and handles, the upcycle project is complete!
