Life in Colour with Danielle Brustman

Danielle Brustman 800x420

Do you ever walk into a room and instantly feel a wave of calm? It’s no secret that colour can evoke emotion and have a deep influence on our mood. Danielle Brustman understands this relationship and it always plays an important role in her designs.

The Melbourne based interior designer and founder of Danielle Brustman studio, has applied her colourful stamp to a vast collection of residential and commercial projects, including Brighton Street Early Learning Centre, The National Gallery of Victoria, and Dark Mofo. Her signature style which oozes character, warmth and elegance, doesn’t stop at interior spaces; she also works on commissions for bespoke furniture, lighting and installations.

We caught up with Danielle to talk about her current projects, finding inspiration in nature, and the vibrant aesthetic of the 60s and 70s.

What do you predict the 2021 colour and trends to be?

I think with everything that has been going this past year and a half, people are looking for an uplifting and inspiring colour palette. We are spending so much time in our homes these days and it is becoming even more important to feel relaxed and content in our spaces at home. Colour is a powerful tool that can brighten our mood and I think the trends will reflect that.

What are three things that are inspiring you right now?

Nature is always a great source of inspiration. I have been spending a great deal of time in the Royal Botanic gardens over lockdown. The plants and flowers are magnificent. I am really enjoying the work of local designers, artisans and makers. There are so many exquisite ceramics coming out of Australia. I am lusting over pieces by Nicolette Johnson, Lucy Tolan and Csilla Csongvay. I am inspired by interior designers working with colour and form in interesting ways... Local favourites are Flack Studio, YSG and Simone Haag.

What are you working on at the moment? I am working on a new child care centre in Sydney, a hairdressing salon in Melbourne and a couple of local residential projects.

What’s your favourite space in your home? And why? My favourite space in my home is my lounge room. It looks out over a park and when I open the windows it’s almost like I am in the park. My lounge room is north facing so the light throughout the day is lovely and makes me happy.

What influences your personal style, home and lifestyle?

I have always been heavily influenced by music, film, fashion and design from the 1960s and 70s. This era was such a radical time in general as well as in the arts and its influence permeates through my design work, home and personal style.
