How to prepare your timber for Timber Floor Varnish:
How to prepare new or bare timber/cork:
Punch exposed nails below the surface. Holes and imperfections should be filled with timber putty after the first coat of Timber Floor Varnish in order to match the putty colour with the coated timber colour.
Sand timber to an even, smooth surface. Vacuum or wipe to remove sanding dust.
Porous timbers: For porous timbers such as pine, apply one coat of Feast Watson Timber Primer after sanding to ensure the top coats will absorb evenly.
Oily timbers: For oily timbers such as tallowwood, brush box and cypress pine, apply one coat of Feast Watson Proofseal™ after sanding to prevent the timber oils from discolouring the coating.
Cork: Prepare uncoated cork tiles in accordance with the supplier's recommendation.
How to prepare previously coated surfaces:
Clean surface with Feast Watson Floor Clean™ and allow to dry.
Sand surface thoroughly until a uniform matt appearance is achieved. Vacuum and wipe to remove sanding dust.
Check adhesion by applying Timber Floor Varnish to a small test area. Allow to dry for 24hrs then firmly press a strip of sticky tape over the test area and rip off quickly.
If coating is removed, it will not adhere to the surface so the surface needs to be sanded back to bare timber.
If coating is not removed, sand the test area back to a uniform matt surface, remove all sanding dust, and apply Timber Floor Varnish as per instructions below.
If previous coating has worn back to expose bare timber it must be completely removed.
Okay, let's finish this floor off...
Make sure your surface is clean from any grease, oil, dirt or dust. We want a blank canvas before we can make the magic happen!
Without introducing any bubbles, use a flat blade stirrer and thoroughly stir your product, both before and during application.
Using the Feast Watson Floor Finish Applicator, brush or a short nap mohair roller, apply your first coat.
Work along 3-4 floorboards at a time, maintaining a wet edge to prevent lap marks and lay off in the direction of the grain. And remember, avoid introducing any bubbles!
When the first coat is thoroughly dry, lightly sand and vacuum to remove dust.
Go ahead and apply your second coat! If you have porous timber or cork, a third coat may be needed to achieve the gloss level.
Note: Timber Floor Varnish cannot be tinted with Prooftint.
Stain bare timber after sanding, using Feast Watson Prooftint or Feast Watson Liming White as per the application instructions.
Using Feast Watson Timber Primer, seal porous timbers such as pine with one coat prior to staining to ensure the stain absorbs evenly.
Ready to stain? Mix Prooftint with Feast Watson Prooftint Colour Reducer to allow time to evenly work the stain across the floor.
Make sure you love your colour! Test the colour mix on off-cuts of flooring to ensure the colour is right for you.
Apply stain to the floor with a Floor Finish Applicator as per Prooftint instructions.
Make sure you allow 12 hours to dry before applying Timber Floor Varnish.
How to maintain your floor with Feast Watson Timber Floor Varnish:
Let's keep your floor looking its best...
Make sure you allow Timber Floor Varnish to cure for a minimum of 4 weeks before polishing.
Regularly clean using Feast Watson Floor Clean. Rejuvenate floors with Feast Watson Floor Polish.
