Feast Watson Wood Shield™

Don’t be fooled by its tough exterior - all wood needs a little TLC.

Feast Watson Wood Shield™ Oil is a timber protection oil that’s ideal for vertical, rough-sawn timber surfaces including timber cladding finishes, fences, screening and planter boxes. This fast-drying formula makes for light work and needs just 30 minutes between coats.

Feast Watson Wood Shield™ Oil protects rough-sawn timber (raw-looking timber that’s sawn and dried before treatment) from weathering and premature ageing through its water-repellent formula and protective coating – reducing the timber’s tendency to warp or split.

This exterior timber protection product is available in matt-effect Black, Walnut, Weathered Grey or (lightly pigmented) Natural. For a higher gloss or satin effect, finish with a topcoat of Feast Watson Weatherproof Varnish.

How to prepare your timber for Feast Watson Wood Shield™:

Let's prep. Simply pick your timber type from the list below and follow the steps.

How to prepare new timber:

  1. Allow your new timber to weather in its final position for 4-6 weeks.

  2. Prepare and clean your timber for coating with Feast Watson Woodprep as per the instructions.

  3. For best results, lightly sand the surface to remove any grain raise. Remember to remove all sanding dust before coating.

How to prepare weathered timber:

  1. Using Feast Watson Woodprep, prepare and clean your weathered or grey timber.

  2. Sanding may be required to remove stains and restore deteriorated surfaces. Remember to remove all sanding dust before coating.

How to prepare previously coated timber:

  1. If your timber is coated with a stain or oil, it can be coated with Wood Shield™ after the surface has weathered.

  2. Test if the surface is ready by sprinkling water onto the timber.

    - If the water absorbs into the timber, you're good to go.

    - If the water beads, further weathering, sanding or stripping is needed.

  3. Painted or varnished surfaces need to be taken back to bare timber by stripping or sanding.

  4. Prepare timber for coating with Feast Watson Woodprep as per the instructions.

How to apply Feast Watson Wood Shield™ Oil:

Finishing touches, here we come...

  1. Ensure your timber is completely dry before applying.

  2. Feast Watson Wood Shield™ Oil should be stirred thoroughly before and during application with a flat blade stirrer, taking care not to introduce bubbles.

  3. If you are coating a large space and require more than one can of Wood Shield™, mix all together in one large container before you begin.

  4. Apply your first coat of Feast Watson Wood Shield™ Oil using a brush, roller or spray. If you are using a roller or spray, remember to back brush the coating to ensure even penetration.

  5. Work along 3-4 planks at a time, in the direction of the grain. Ensure edges and end grain are fully coated.

  6. Before applying additional coats, allow the first coat to soak into the timber. Your first coat does not need to fully dry before applying subsequent coats.

  7. Apply additional coats until your timber is fully saturated and unable to absorb more coating. A minimum of two coats is required.

Note: Wood Shield™ Oil does NOT require thinning.

How to maintain your timber after using Feast Watson Wood Shield™ Oil:

  1. Regularly monitor your newly coated timber for signs of colour loss, dryness and weathering.

  2. If required, clean the surface using Woodprep, allow the surface to dry and recoat with coats of Feast Watson Wood Shield™ Oil until the timber is saturated.

Do not pour leftover product down the drain.

Brush leftover product onto newspaper, and allowed to completely dry, before disposing of via general waste collection.
