How to prepare your timber for Feast Watson Exterior Stain & Varnish:

The best results are because of great preparation. Just follow these simple steps:

How to prepare bare timber:

  1. Bare timber will need to weather for two weeks in order for leaching of the tannins and oils to occur.

  2. All other timbers need to weather for approximately 4-6 weeks.

  3. We recommend that tannin-rich timbers are regularly hosed with water to assist leaching during this time.

  4. To coat new timber immediately, use Intergrain® UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover, following label instructions.

  5. After weathering or using UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover, prepare timber for coating by washing with Feast Watson Woodprep, as per the label instructions.

  6. Sand to a smooth surface and remove all sanding dust before coating.

How to prepare Weathered Timber:

  1. Prepare weathered or grey timber by cleaning thoroughly with Feast Watson Woodprep as per the instructions.

  2. Remove stains and deteriorated surfaces by sanding. Remember to remove all sanding dust before coating.

How to prepare Previously Coated Timber:

  1. Previously coated surfaces need to be stripped or sanded back to bare timber before application.

  2. Test if the surface is ready by sprinkling water onto the timber:

    - If the water absorbs into the timber, you're good to go.

    - If the water beads, further weathering, sanding or stripping is required.

  3. Prepare timber for coating with Feast Watson Woodprep, as per the instructions.

How to apply Feast Watson Exterior Stain and Varnish:

Let's do this!

  1. Make sure you love your colour. Test colour on an off-cut before staining your entire surface.

  2. Exterior Stain & Varnish should be stirred thoroughly before and during application with a flat blade stirrer, taking care not to introduce bubbles.

  1. Apply Exterior Stain & Varnish using a brush or spray. If spraying, Exterior Stain & Varnish may be thinned by using 10% mineral turpentine. Ensure edges and end grain are fully coated.

  2. Apply three coats. If you have thinned your coating, apply a fourth coat.

  3. For a smooth finish, remember to sand lightly between coats with fine-grade sandpaper.

  4. If you have achieved your desired colour with the first coat, complete the following two coats with Feast Watson Weatherproof™, as additional coats of Exterior Stain & Varnish will intensify the colour.

  5. Allow 12 hours of drying between coats.

You're all done! Good job.

How to maintain your timber after using Feast Watson Exterior Stain & Varnish:

  1. As you would with any other area of your home, regularly monitor the surface every 12 months for signs of colour loss or surface defects.

  2. When required, lightly sand the surface to a dull finish and remove dust.

  3. Recoat with additional coats of Exterior Stain & Varnish as per application instructions.

Do not pour leftover product down the drain.

Brush leftover product onto newspaper, and allowed to completely dry, before disposing of via general waste collection.

Empty containers should be left open in a well-ventilated area to dry out. When dry, recycle the container through steel can recycle programs such as Paintback.
