Prooftint Traditional Stain

Spirit Based Stain, Retains Timber Grain

Prooftint is a unique, fast drying, spirit based stain that allows the full clarity of the timber grain to show through after staining.

Prooftint can be used neat to achieve deep, rich colour or diluted with Prooftint Colour Reducer or Feast Watson Timber Primer to achieve lighter shades. Prooftint colours can be mixed together to achieve an exact colour match for your timber. Such versatility makes it ideal for colour matching to existing colour schemes and repairing scratches and damage to stained timber.

Prooftint can also be added to Feast Watson Clear Varnish create one-step colour and protection, or added to Feast Watson Liming White (oil based) to produce a range of pastel shades.

Prooftint is avaliable in a range of popular colours including Black Japan, Brown Japan, Old Baltic, Walnut and Elm.

Note: Do NOT add Prooftint directly to Floorproof Pro, Floorclear or Mastertouch Wipe-On Poly.

surface preparation

New Timber
Sand to a smooth surface and remove all sanding dust before coating. Seal soft porous timbers, such as Pine, Meranti and Cedar with Timber Primer to ensure even absorption into the timber.

Previously Coated Timber
Previously coated surfaces need to be sanded back to bare timber. Remove all sanding dust before staining.

If using with Tung Oil we recommend large areas and porous timber are sealed with one coat of untinted Tung Oil before staining with a Prooftint/Tung Oil mixture. If opting to use Prooftint neat on large areas such as floors, ensure the timber is sealed wit Proofseal if oily, prior to staining.

Application

Staining Small Areas (or Detailed Areas)
Apply Prooftint direct with a brush or cloth, ensuring that the product is evenly distributed over the area to be stained. Allow approximately 2-5 minutes for the stain to penetrate the surface before wiping off the excess with a clean, soft cloth. Wipe in the direction of the grain. Ensure the edges of adjoining sections are carefully blended together by evenly wiping the overlap area.

Once thoroughly dry, seal with Feast Watson Floorseal Oil, Clear Varnish, Weatherproof Pro, or Scandinavian Oil. The clear topcoat ensures lasting protection and fully develops the final colour.

Staining Large Areas (including floors)
Diluted Prooftint with Prooftint Colour Reducer to allow more time to evenly distribute the stain and achieve a uniform appearance. Add Prooftint to Prooftint Colour Reducer at the required mixing ratio to achieve your desired colour and strength. 1 part Prooftint mixed with 1 part Prooftint Colour Reducer will provide approximately half the strength of colour. Darker colours can be obtained with additional coats or by adding more Prooftint to the mix. For lighter shades dilute Prooftint further with Prooftint Colour Reducer.

If using Feast Watson Tung Oil, add up to 10% Prooftint directly to the oil and use this mixture to stain the timber.

Apply the mixture with a brush or Feast Watson Floor Finish Applicator and lambswool sock, ensuring that the product is evenly distributed over the area to be stained. To achieve an uniform finish, cut around the edges and corners with a narrow brush as you go, as opposed to cutting in the whole area first. To avoid lap marks and double build, begin at one edge and follow through to a natural break such as a door, window or corner. When staining floors, stain 2-3 boards at a time, moving the full length of the board.

Allow approximately 2-5 minutes for the stain to penetrate the surface before wiping off the excess with a clean, soft cloth. Ensure that the edges of adjoining sections are carefully blended together by evenly wiping the overlap area. Take care to wipe in the direction of the grain when removing excess.

Once thoroughly dry, preserve the stain and provide the durability required for high wear areas by sealing with Feast Watson Floorseal Oil, Floorproof Pro or Floorclear.

Stain & Varnish Method
Up to 10% Prooftint may be added to Feast Watson Clear Varnish or Liming White(oil based), for use as a one step stain and varnish. Apply the varnish stain by brush and allow to dry. Do not wipe off excess.
